Pre-employment testing gives you a way to objectively evaluate your job candidates. It reduces bias in the hiring process by focusing on applicants’ abilities instead of their background or education.

Pre-employment screening also makes it easy to see the big picture. Let’s say two candidates both say they have the French and collaboration skills you need. Testing enables you to confirm the extent of these skills, revealing who is best suited for the role.

There are many testing platforms out there, all with different features. Here, we compare TestGorilla and Codility so you can decide which would work best for your business.

How does TestGorilla work?

More than 10,000 top brands and companies trust TestGorilla with their hiring needs. With more than 400+ tests, you can use the platform to test cognitive ability, culture-add, personality type, and much more.

TestGorilla's new homepage

Even if you’ve never worked with pre-employment testing before, TestGorilla makes it easy to get started. Just indicate what role you’re hiring for, choose from the suggested tests, add your own questions, and send out custom assessments in just a few clicks.

TestGorilla creates a secure, fair, and engaging experience for candidates, too. They can open the link to their assessment and complete it from any mobile device. You can even customize assessments with your logo and brand colors.

Comparing applicants is easier with TestGorilla, too – we provide clear rankings and benchmarks based on overall and individual test scores.

You can use TestGorilla to hire developers with custom coding challenges and to find the right managers, translators, editors, or almost any other professionals.

How does Codility work?

Codility is a platform primarily for hiring engineers, though it can also be used to assess developers, data scientists, technical interns, and software testers.

Codility has three main features:

  • CodeCheck provides enables users to build a CodeCheck test using ready-to-use tasks, based on the candidate's role, seniority, and the desired tech stack.

  • CodeLive is for interactive interviews, where users and candidates optimize or create code together

  • CodeEvent is for enterprises who want to create campus recruiting events, such as hackathons

Unlike TestGorilla, Codility doesn’t test cognitive ability, culture-add, personality, or other non-technical skills.

TestGorilla vs. Codility: Test libraries

Pre-employment screening platforms with a large range of tests in their test libraries enable you to hire for every open position you have.

A large pool of tests also means you can evaluate candidates more fully, testing not just job-specific skills but communication, cognitive ability, and culture-add.

TestGorilla’s test library

TestGorilla offers more than 400+ tests across many categories, including:

  • Cognitive ability

  • Personality and culture

  • Programming skills

  • Software skills

  • Languages

  • Job-specific skills, including those for developers, engineers, and other roles

  • Situational judgment

You can further customize your assessment with your own questions and preferred answer formats, such as file upload, multiple-choice, audio, text, and video.

TestGorilla offers localized websites in 12 languages, making it easy to assess and hire workers from around the world.

Codility’s test library

Codility offers more than 90 coding language and technology tests, including for HTML, JavaScript, jQuery, Python, C#, C++, Ruby, and many more, as well as development tools and frameworks. These tests are designed to evaluate candidates' problem-solving skills, applicable skills, and technical knowledge. Employers can also create custom questions in multiple-choice, multiple-response, and essay formats.

Codility has a recruitment library consisting of over 1000 tasks. Employers can mix and match tasks or create their own custom challenges. Coding tasks can take the form of tests, where applicants answer questions or custom coding challenges.

Codility also offers job-specific testing through its CodeCheck Template feature. Unlike TestGorilla, Codility doesn’t have tests to evaluate human language, personality, general cognitive ability, or non-technical skills.

TestGorilla vs. Codility: Functionalities for hiring developers

Technical skills tests help you evaluate candidates’ proficiency in various languages and development frameworks.

In particular, coding challenges enable you to see exactly how candidates handle coding tasks typical of your company, meaning you can hire with confidence.

Hiring developers with TestGorilla

TestGorilla has more than 120 tests assessing developer skills. These include:

  • Coding language tests for Python, Ruby, JavaScript, TypeScript, and others

  • Web-development framework tests for Flask, Django, Express.js, and others

  • More than 50 tests for platforms such as Microsoft Power BI and Salesforce

  • Mobile-development framework tests for Ionic, Flutter, and others

  • Custom challenges to test real-world coding and debugging tasks

They have also recently released a new language-agnostic test, which allows you to assess candidates' algorithmic thinking skills in up to 20 languages within a single test.

Hiring developers with Codility

Codility offers more than 90 coding language and technology tests, including for HTML, JavaScript, and jQuery. Users can choose from a library of coding tasks for applicants to complete or create their own custom questions.

Users also benefit from code playback and automatic scoring. Hiring managers can create live coding interviews where an applicant receives coding, debugging, or other technical problems to solve in real time.

Codility enables users to create gamified hackathon recruitment events, too. These can be held at college campus events or job fairs to find early-career developers. Applicants compete in challenges for the top of the leaderboard.

TestGorilla vs. Codility: Video interviews

One-way video interviews offer candidates the opportunity to record a video reply to a prepared or custom video question, enabling you to get a better idea of their presentation skills, behavioral traits, and personality.

TestGorilla’s video interviews

With TestGorilla, you can create specific video interview questions and set limits on how long an applicant’s video reply can be. TestGorilla even shows you how many recording attempts a candidate made.

You can review video replies from any device and even add comments or ratings to share your thoughts with your hiring team.

Codility’s video interviews

Codility offers live interviews where users can invite a candidate and members of their hiring team to solve coding challenges in real time.

Applicants can use Miro-powered whiteboards to show their work. The full-screen feature means everyone on the call can see each other, while a shared editor enables applicants to display their coding work.

Unlike TestGorilla’s interviews, which enable users to evaluate a wide range of candidates’ attributes, Codility’s interviews focus only on conducting coding tasks.

TestGorilla vs. Codility: Candidate experience and company branding

Candidates are more likely to complete pre-employment assessments when the tests are mobile-friendly, come with applicant support, and are a reasonable length.

A great candidate testing experience also improves your brand image and shows applicants you care about them.

The candidate experience with TestGorilla

TestGorilla makes it easy to add your company branding, including colors and logo, to your assessments, so candidates can be confident they’re taking a legitimate test from your organization.

You can also create custom intro and outro videos so applicants get a warm welcome from you or your team. Personalized invitations to candidates ensure a positive impression of your company from the very start.

Applicants can complete their assessments from any mobile device without signing up for an account. Assessments are typically 10-50 minutes, enabling candidates to give their full focus to each test without feeling overwhelmed.

The candidate experience with Codility

Once applicants get a test invitation, they can start the test in any supported browser without needing to download software or log in.

In CodeEvent hackathons and live coding events, candidates compete against one another in real time, creating a game-like atmosphere. Employers can brand these events and award a prize to top candidates.

Employers can also add their brand colors and logo to candidate invitations and the assessments.

TestGorilla vs. Codility: Quality control

Pre-employment testing quality control measures give you confidence in your test results.

These measures typically include extensive quality checks, frequent updates, regular updating of questions, and integration of customer feedback.

TestGorilla’s quality-control processes

TestGorilla's new quality control screenshot

Every one of our tests is a group effort. We collaborate with a team of psychometricians, copywriters, subject-matter experts, and peer reviewers to ensure each test is scientifically backed and accurate.

Before any TestGorilla test goes live, it undergoes a 28-step quality-control process, which includes sample testing and reviews.

TestGorilla also proactively seeks and implements candidate and employer feedback to continuously update and improve the test library.

Codility’s quality-control processes

Codility doesn’t provide much detail about its quality-control process, though it does state it invests in R&D to create new task types, tests, and questions regularly.

Codility also has a Product Insights team (referred to as Codility Labs) that uses psychometrics, I-O psychology, and data science to improve and create new tests, and update their evaluation methods.

TestGorilla vs. Codility: Anti-cheating measures

Anti-cheating measures ensure you can rely on your pre-employment assessment platform and its results. These features make assessments fair for applicants and ensure you’re only hiring people with the skills you need.

TestGorilla’s anti-cheating measures

TestGorilla uses layers of anti-cheating measures to give you full confidence in your pre-employment assessment results. These include:

  • Taking regular webcam screenshots (with applicant permission)

  • IP-address monitoring, so only your intended applicant completes the test

  • A large question pool with questions replaced after they reach a threshold maximum exposure limit, reducing the risk of online leaks

  • Disabling copy-paste functionality during tests

  • Full-screen detection and time limits so applicants can’t search for answers online

Codility’s anti-cheating measures

With Codility, you can ask candidates to scan a photo ID and take a selfie to confirm their identity, however this is only available to users in the premium tier or as a standalone extra. The platform also logs their IP address, and an alert is raised if there is more than one location detected. Codility also uses a tool called Similarity Check to scrape the internet for leaked answers and replace them. However, if users share test questions manually or verbally, Similarity Check cannot detect this.

Codility also flags suspected ChatGPT and AI use on assessments.

TestGorilla vs. Codility: Reporting and analytics

Once applicants complete their pre-employment assessments, reports and analytics do the rest of the hard work to show you how each candidate performed.

Clear, helpful reports are invaluable for you to compare applicants, identify top talent, and share the results with your team to make a hiring decision.

TestGorilla’s reporting and analytics features

TestGorilla's new reporting and analytics screenshot

TestGorilla makes it easy to compare candidates and see who performed best on each test.

You can share reports using your ATS or download them as PDF, XLSX, or CSV files. Add comments for your hiring team to see so you can communicate about the most promising talent.

Codility’s reporting and analytics features

Codility reports show each candidate’s overall score and their score for each test. Reports also include a timeline that shows every step the candidate took to complete their test.

TestGorilla vs. Codility: Pricing

Many pre-employment testing platforms use monthly or annual subscription models. Different tiers come with different features.

Some providers also offer free trials or free plans.

TestGorilla’s pricing

TestGorilla has three pricing plans for companies with different hiring needs:

  • Free: Our free forever plan offers unlimited access to five tests with up to five custom questions.

  • Starter: The Starter plan starts at $75 per month and can be billed monthly or annually. You can have an unlimited number of active assessments.

  • Pro: The Pro plan starts at $115 per month and can be billed monthly or annually. It offers ATS integrations, custom branded assessments, video questions, and access to an API.

TestGorilla's new pricing screenshot

Pricing for the Starter and Pro plans scales up based on the size of your company. We base company size on the number of full-time equivalent employees (FTEs) you have. For example, two part-time employees who each work half of the standard full-time hours equal one FTE.

Companies with 15 or fewer FTEs must select an annual plan. Larger companies can choose to pay monthly or purchase an annual plan at a discount.

All TestGorilla plans enable you to test an unlimited number of candidates with each assessment.

Codility’s pricing

Codility offers a free trial but no free plan. They offer three pricing tiers: Starter: The Starter plan is priced at $1,200 annually. It includes 120 invites per year (additional invites available for purchase), 1 platform user, and access to a standard task library of 1200+ questions.

Scale: The Scale plan is available at $5,000 annually or $500 per month. It includes 25 invites per month (additional invites available for purchase), 3 platform users, and access to a task library with over 1,800 questions Custom: For larger organizations with custom needs, Codility offers a custom plan with customized pricing and advanced features.

Conclusion: TestGorilla vs Codility

Both TestGorilla and Codility are pre-employment assessment platforms that save you time and reduce human bias by helping you evaluate applicants on concrete abilities, not just subjective resumes.

There’s more than 400+ tests to choose from that tackle technical skills, soft skills, cognitive abilities, and values and you can add custom questions and challenges. This means you can create an almost infinite number of assessments for different positions!

While Codility has two-way technical interviews and enables companies to create campus recruitment events, it’s designed solely for hiring developers, engineers, software testers, and data scientists. The platform offers a 1000+ task library and allows for creating custom questions and challenges,

TestGorilla, on the other hand, is flexible enough to hire translators, designers, copywriters, retail staff, sales professionals, and just about any position across various industries.
